Zio Ziegler in Puerto Rico

Zio Ziegler stopped by to share some amazing photos of his trip to Puerto Rico. He painted a couple murals while down there, including a 3 story building set in a town’s square. Amazing work.

Zio is also currently showing at Ian Ross Gallery in the city. Be sure to stop by and check out his use of the space and depth in range; involving color use to his monochromatic work.

Cannon Dill + Brett Flanigan

Many thanks to Whitney Phaneuf & EBX for the highlight of the upcoming mural tour. We are working out some final details and have just made our order for paint.

Oakland Street Art Goes on the Road
Cannon Dill and Brett Flanigan are taking a cross-country trip in May to paint murals in a dozen cities.
By Whitney Phaneuf

When it comes to art, Oakland muralist Cannon Dill doesn’t have any interest in following the rules. The 21-year-old said his art career took off when he started ditching class at California College of the Arts, where he studied printmaking, to participate in the Occupy movement.

“Hanging out down there was way more real than sitting in class,” Dill recalled recently, sitting in Oakland’s LeQuiVive Gallery — where his first solo exhibition, Heavy Water, will open on Friday, April 5. “All the vibes I got from everyone inspired me.” His pen-and-ink drawing “All Day Every Day” — a mystical-looking wolf cradling in its arms scattered

Unboxed 2.12

To Our Viewers,
Our Unboxed series is moving forward, we won’t be so pressed with deadlines to bring you these. We love the response, we appreciate the sharing and the feedback. I want to personally thank Tanja Baker for the hard work and dedication she placed into the growth & the start of the project. Without her none of this would’ve been possible. She introduced Rachel Escoto, whom is now contributing to the Unboxed series. Tanja has opted out to continue with her own company which does not allow her to travel like she had been. I wish it weren’t so but we are very thrilled to work with Rachel as she cracks off the new direction. And wish Tanja the best in her personal growth of her own company. I am in debt.
Regards,
Michael

Located in the Central Valley, the original lavish resort was built in 1878, after 2 fires this is the 3rd structure built in 1912 and served as a stomping ground for the Hollywood elite and wealthy like Clark Gable, Charlie Chaplin, Mae West and baseball great Joe Dimaggio. In 1942 it was purchased by the US government and used for the interrogation of Japanese and German POW’s. After the war it served for a short time as a monastery…it now sits in forgotten silence since the 1980′s.

Spooky is the word. Limited space in an endless void of society. The Drawbridge is Graffito still finds a way to emerge. The “Leave Before Dark” photo is my favorite. A kinda of eerie location. Tanja teasingly advises on the location,

don’t go at night and watch for trains especially when you have to cross that bridge

Studio En Scène – Cannon Dill

Cannon Dill welcomes us into his studio space for a nice afternoon of process and a discussion of his work. He has been locking himself away gearing up for his Heavy Water show with LQV. The work shows a strong grasp on his style and an exploration of new takes on the classics; including color. Cannon’s dual conflict of man and nature remains evident as he works in the classic wood grain, rustic, fine line detail work, but also a fresh perspective of internal struggle surfaces with the new work.

At first glance, Heavy Water becomes the feeling of the pinnacle, folksy storytelling from Cannon. The idea of standing back from the work changes things; a magnification is more clear. The ocean serves a backdrop for one piece, we see the line work explore what looks like innards. Another piece provides a ribbon of tears from the character’s eye, making the line work tighter. Setting a scale of proportions, this narrative begins to feel more in line with Swift’s certain novel, and with this set rule, we gain the magnitude and dedication to murals that Cannon produces. Cannon is working on completing a 40 piece set for his April 5th opening with LeQuiVive.

The blend of photography & street art balanced. Tanja finds some the public sketches of the South Bay, heading into new territory it is evident that some things look so much alike. New paintings and old structures seem to make for some of the best contrast. Be sure to follow teetonka on instagram for her Unboxed series daily.
